Message from Bishop McCormack on Conscience and Your Vote

Conscience and Your Vote

December 6, 2007

Dear Friends in Christ:

Soon, we will enjoy the opportunity to vote for a candidate to be the next political leader for our nation. We live in a country of varied and sometimes conflicting values that are often reflected in the platforms among candidates for office. So, we ask ourselves the question, “for whom should I vote this year?”

The Diocese of Manchester recently developed a document to help voters in their understanding of the formation of one’s conscience and, in so doing, to arrive at a decision regarding who is a suitable candidate to lead our nation at this time. As voters, each of us needs to examine our values, to study the issues of the day, and to decide which candidate we believe will best serve our nation.

The document, “ Conscience and Your Vote ,” is based on the shared faith and human understanding we possess as Catholics. This is not a “Voter Guide.” The Diocese of Manchester does not endorse a particular candidate, political party, or political action committee.

Voting is both a right and a responsibility. When we vote, we preserve and shape the freedoms of our society. I urge everyone to vote and am confident that this document will help you as you prepare to participate in the democratic process.

With best wishes for a blessed Advent and Christmas season, I remain

Sincerely,

Bishop John B. McCormack
Bishop of Manchester
